At their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 18th, Town Council voted to approve the creation of Ashland's first Public Art Commission. Like the Town's existing boards & committees (Planning Commission, Economic Development Authority, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Parks & Recreation Committee), the newly-created Public Art Commission will serve as an advisory board to Town Council specifically regarding the placement, support, and value of public artwork as a means to beautify the Town of Ashland and promote creative place-making within public spaces.
Purpose
The purpose of the Public Art Commission is to place and support the creation of public art as an integral aspect of life for all people in Ashland by making recommendations, administering programs, policies, and grants, and acting as a liaison between the arts community and the Town for the development of a cohesive public art program in the Town of Ashland.
Details
- The Commission will be comprised of five members, 18 years of age or older, serving terms of four years.
- Individuals residing in either the Town of Ashland OR Hanover County are eligible and encouraged to apply.
- Commission members must have relevant experience in at least one of the following areas: art development, visual art, performance art, art education, or fundraising and philanthropy.
How to Apply
The Town is now accepting applications for Public Art Commission members. All applications must be submitted by Wednesday, November 30th at 11:59 PM for consideration. Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted directly. This is an unpaid, public service position. The Public Art Commission is expected to meet at least four times per year or more as necessary.
